Small towns have the biggest hearts. We should know. South County is the epitome of community and coming together for great causes. That’s why it was a no-brainer when the Boys Soccer team decided it would lend its service to the Muddy Creek Animal Hospital in West River, MD to fulfill the community service project requirement for Southern High School Athletics. With the help of the soccer athletes, coaches and parents – one who even came up with the ‘Dawgs For Dogs’ name and idea– the team was able to collect items to assist with the daily care of our favorite, furry friends.
A call for donations was put out among the group. Immediately, requested items began to pour in as people cleaned out their linen closets and reached into their pockets to spare a few dollars to purchase dog toys. Blankets and towels are what were needed most at the animal hospital. They use them in the animal cages to create warm and comfy places for them to rest; towels are great for messes, too. These items are the gift that keep on giving because they can be washed and used over and over again instead of being tossed. Now, that’s giving back in more ways than one.
To wrap up the season, the team made one final push to collect items. On a windy and chilly Friday night just outside of the building near the team room, soccer players, parents and coaches gathered blankets and towels. Spectators heading from the parking lot to the stadium for the last football game of the season stopped by to share their adoration for the team’s efforts. Even our own mascot made an appearance. We love it when a good thing comes together.
All of the items were packed up and dropped off to Muddy Creek Animal Hospital. The staff was appreciative as they saw the bags rolling in. One of them made the remark, “wow! You guys collected a lot. Thank you.” Standing in the cold made this all worth it.
Giving back doesn’t always have to be grandiose. It can be as simple as reaching out to the people around you to see if there is any way to make their day just a little brighter. Your community. Your family. Your school. How can I help? What do you need? I would love to assist you. Is there anything I can contribute?
We are thankful for everyone who made this COMMUNITY SERVICE PAWJECT a success and are pleased to make the coming days of our furry friends just a little more warm.
And as always…GO DAWGS/DOGS!
